KFC’s New Chicken & Waffle Sandwich

Food is where it begins and ends.  Or should anyway. — Goose

Hi there, and welcome to my first post!  In this blog, I will focus on new food offerings, particularly those at fast food restaurants.  I’ll also give my take on new or more unique restaurants, especially those of the “fast casual” variety.  I will not be reviewing your standard chain restaurants such as Applebee’s or Chili’s but I may review a new menu item they have there.  Got it?  That’s great.  Let’s get this party started….

Upon a recent visit visit to my local KFC, I noticed they were getting into the chicken and waffles craze/business.  This pleased me greatly as 1) I’m a huge fan of waffles; and 2) who doesn’t love a good piece of fried chicken, particularly one paired with waffles?  Certainly no one that I know or associate with.  So, without much hesitation, I decided to give it a gander.

The sandwich itself comes dressed with a “spicy honey” sauce which I found delightful, though I would have preferred something a tad more spicy and just a tad more in general (the amount spread on the sandwich was on the skimpy side).  The sandwich had a good weight to it however (always a good sign) and was served piping hot.  While the chicken was cooked to near perfection, I was DEEPLY disappointed in the quality of the waffles.  They were soggy and lacked any sort of crispiness.  The whole point of a hot sandwich is to have two toasty ends.  My sandwich failed miserably in this area.  The waffles felt like they had been microwaved instead of toasted – an unforgivable sin many in the food business would argue, even for fast food.  If not for the high quality of the chicken and the delicious, albeit skimpy, sauce, this sandwich would have been a total disaster.

Taking all this into consideration, I give it 3 out of 5 honks.  Definitely good, but could have been so much better.
